Technology is developing at a rapid rate, sports technology in particular. For sports fans there are numerous ways they can consume and engage with content, and chatbots within popular messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger are the latest way for sports teams and athletes to connect both parties.
Using bots opens up a completely different avenue for sports teams and athletes, it gives them the ability to send messages and alerts for upcoming games and breaking news. For teams, they can use bots to sell tickets, merchandise, and make it a real go-to hub for fans. The best part of it is that fans are already there and interacting in huge numbers (FB Messenger just surpassed 1 Billion users).
Fans will be able to interact with their favourite players, taking fan engagement to the next level. Teams that introduce chatbots will make user interaction seem more personal, and from a business perspective improving customer experience like that will be beneficial.
Twitter currently dominates the way sports fans digest sports news, and while social media provides a useful source for sports content, it’s far less personal to the fan and normally a one-way conversation. Bots are far more converse, giving fans the sense of being part of a conversation with a friend whilst discovering all the content that matters to them.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are the first football clubs to utilise the major advancements of messaging apps, both partnering with Japan Based Line. The two clubs not only provide their fans with the latest team updates, but sell lucrative merchandise through the platform.
The NBA have set the marker when adopting new sports tech, they became the first league globally to launch a Facebook Messenger bot for last month’s NBA finals. Fans were able ask the bot a selection of questions around key games and players, they could even request game highlights.
Chat Marketing Platform, Chatsuite, are thriving under the developing chatbot ecosystem. Chatsuite’s bot development and messaging solutions for the world of sport are giving sports brands an array of possibilities to reach whole new audiences with exciting conversational experiences, that drive higher levels of reach and engagement.
Bots are providing an exciting new platform for teams, players, and fans to engage with one another. Chatbots are still very much in the development stage and some way off from hitting its peak, but a new era is on the horizon for sports fans, and we’re excited.
