Garmin introduces smart cycling technology for a safer ride

Garmin has announced a suite of smart cycling devices to help to create a safer cycling environment. The Varia line of smart cycling devices include, a first-of-its-kind rearview bike radar and smart bike lights.

“Over 700 cyclists are killed and more than 49,000 are injured in motor vehicle crashes every year.”

The majority of of motor vehicle incidents with cyclists occur when a cyclists is hit from behind. The Varia rearview bike radar warns cyclists of any vehicle that is approaching them from behind and it warns approaching vehicles of any cyclists ahead.

The device includes a radar tail light transmitted and a radar display unit, the transmitter will detect approaching vehicles from up to 140 meters/153 yards behind and the display unit will get brighter as the cars approach. The Varia rearview bike radar will show up to eight vehicles at a time.

Varia smart bike lights will automatically adjust to changing conditions as well as the speed of the cyclist. The headlight beam will project further ahead if your cycling at a faster speed and vice verse if your speed decreases. The light will project ahead instead all around, focusing on where cyclists need it most.

The tail light operates in solid and flashing modes, the light will increase intensity when the cyclists is decelerating to warn approaching vehicles behind.
